Yenny Rijna loves
people. She spent her working years greeting tourists in
some of the best shops on Kaya Grandi. But when she retired
six years ago she realized that she missed meeting people
from around the world. But Yenny is exceptionally
talented and began creating dolls, driftwood constructions
and paintings on "found" materials. Soon, as tourists
wandered through town they began to notice the rows of small
house fronts decorating her garden wall. Later these were
joined by an array of life-sized dolls. Yenny's old friends
had found her and now she has visitors every day. They even
convinced her to sell her artwork. Adi paints on almost
anything As Adi puts it: "What people
don't use, we use." His creations embody old soap boxes,
plant cuttings, cooking skewers, bottle caps, newspaper and
driftwood. The wall pieces usually hang from an old aluminum
can pull-tab. He has also painted scenes of old Bonaire on
the garden walls and even created a "Delft"
toilet. When you're on Bonaire, look
for Yenny's Garden gallery. The dolls will be waiting to
greet you just outside her gate. It's easy to find; right
around the corner from the post office.

About two years ago, Yenny met local artist Adi Figaroa and
recently they began to collaborate. As a result, the garden
has grown more and more interesting. Adi, who is locally
known as the sculptor who makes some of the best Karnaval
floats, has been creating unique art for many years. He
paints on cinder blocks, paint can lids, coconuts, seeds,
stones, shells and even the tops of old 55 gallon
drums.
